Born in Gloucestershire, England, in 1922, King-Smith grew up on a small farm during the Great Depression. His childhood was marked by poverty, hard work, and a deep love of animals.
King-Smith's passion for writing began at an early age. As a shy and introverted child, he found solace in books and dreamed of one day becoming an author.
After serving as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II, King-Smith returned home and worked as a farmer for many years. All the while, he continued to write stories, but it wasn't until he was in his fifties that he finally found success.
In 1983, King-Smith's novel "The Sheep-Pig" was published to critical acclaim. The book tells the story of a pig who is raised by sheep and believes he is one of them.
"The Sheep-Pig" was a huge commercial success and won numerous awards, including the Whitbread Children's Book Award and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
After the success of "The Sheep-Pig," King-Smith went on to write over 100 books for children and adults, including favorites such as "Babe," "The Hodgeheg," and "The Water Horse."

About the Author
Dick King-Smith was born in Gloucestershire, England, in 1922. He worked as a farmer for many years before becoming a full-time writer. King-Smith has written over 100 books for children and adults, including the bestselling novel "Babe." His books have been translated into over 30 languages and have sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
King-Smith was awarded an OBE in 2009 for his services to children's literature. He died in 2011 at the age of 88.
