Fugard and Kani were born in the same year, 1932, and they grew up in the same small town in the Eastern Cape. They were both the children of poor white families, and they both experienced the racism and discrimination that was rampant in South Africa at the time.

Despite the challenges they faced, Fugard and Kani formed a close bond. They shared a love of theater, and they both dreamed of becoming actors. In 1956, they founded the Serpent Players, a theater company that performed plays that explored the social and political issues of the day.

The Serpent Players were a success, and Fugard and Kani soon became two of the most prominent figures in South African theater. However, their work was also controversial, and they were often targeted by the apartheid regime. In 1963, they were arrested and detained for their involvement in a protest against the government.
