This biography for kids 12+ explores the life and legacy of Walt Disney, from his humble beginnings in Missouri to his rise to fame as one of the most successful entertainers in history. Along the way, we'll learn about his struggles, his triumphs, and his personal life.

Early Life

Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the fourth of five children. His father, Elias, was a carpenter, and his mother, Flora, was a homemaker. The family moved to Marceline, Missouri, when Walt was four years old. It was there that he developed his love of drawing and storytelling.

When Walt was 14, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He attended high school there and took art classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. After graduating from high school, Walt worked as a commercial artist for a short time before moving to Hollywood in 1923.

Early Career

Walt Disney's early career in Hollywood was marked by both success and failure. He founded his first animation studio, Laugh-O-Gram Films, in 1923. However, the studio went bankrupt in 1924. Undeterred, Walt founded a new studio, the Walt Disney Company, in 1928. The studio's first major success was the animated short film "Steamboat Willie" (1928),which introduced Mickey Mouse to the world.

Throughout the 1930s, the Walt Disney Company produced a series of successful animated films, including "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937),"Pinocchio" (1940),and "Fantasia" (1940). These films helped to establish the Disney Company as a major force in the entertainment industry.

World War II and After

During World War II, the Disney Company produced a number of films for the U.S. government, including training films and propaganda cartoons. After the war, the company returned to producing animated films, including "Cinderella" (1950),"Alice in Wonderland" (1951),and "Peter Pan" (1953).

In 1955, the Disney Company opened its first theme park, Disneyland, in Anaheim, California. Disneyland was an instant success, and it quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The company went on to open other theme parks around the world, including Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan.

Personal Life

Walt Disney married Lillian Bounds in 1925. The couple had two daughters, Diane and Sharon. Disney was a devoted family man, and he loved spending time with his wife and children.

Disney was also a generous philanthropist. He donated millions of dollars to charities and organizations throughout his lifetime. He was particularly passionate about helping children, and he founded the Walt Disney Children's Hospital in Los Angeles in 1966.

Legacy

Walt Disney died of lung cancer on December 15, 1966, at the age of 65. He left behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and imagination. His films, theme parks, and characters have entertained and inspired generations of children and adults alike.

Did Walt Disney have his happily ever after? It's hard to say for sure. He achieved great success in his career, but he also faced personal challenges, including the death of his mother when he was just a child. Ultimately, it's up to each individual to decide whether or not they believe Walt Disney had a happy ending.

Walt Disney was a complex and fascinating figure. He was a visionary artist who brought joy to millions of people around the world. He was also a flawed human being who faced his own share of challenges. But through it all, he never lost his sense of wonder and imagination.

This biography for kids 12+ is just a brief overview of Walt Disney's life and legacy. To learn more about this extraordinary man, I encourage you to read books, watch documentaries, and visit his theme parks. You may also want to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, California.
