Touro was born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1775. His parents were Sephardic Jews who had emigrated from Portugal. Touro's father was a merchant, and his mother was a devout woman who instilled in her son a strong sense of social responsibility.

Touro began his career as a merchant in New Orleans in 1801. He was successful in business, and he soon became one of the wealthiest men in the city. Touro used his wealth to help those in need. He donated money to build hospitals, schools, and synagogues. He also helped to support orphans, widows, and the poor.

Touro was a man of great faith. He was a devout Jew who believed that it was his duty to help others. He once said, "I have always endeavored to do good, and I have never asked for anything in return." Touro's generosity extended beyond his own community. He also donated money to help victims of natural disasters and to support educational institutions.

Touro was a humble man who never sought recognition for his good works. He often gave anonymously, and he refused to have his name put on the buildings that he helped to fund. Touro's modesty was such that he even tried to avoid being photographed.

Despite his efforts to remain anonymous, Touro's generosity became well known. He was honored by the city of New Orleans and by the state of Louisiana. In 1854, he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate. Touro served in the Senate for one term, and he used his position to advocate for the poor and the needy.

Touro died in New Orleans in 1854. He was 79 years old. He left behind a legacy of generosity and compassion that continues to inspire people today. Touro's story is a reminder that one person can make a difference in the world.

Today, there are over 10,000 Jews living in the city.
