Excerpt from the Book
I was born in New York City in 1954, the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants. My parents were working-class people who struggled to make ends meet. We lived in a small apartment in the Bronx, and I shared a bedroom with my three sisters. I was a shy and introverted child, and I spent most of my time reading and writing.
When I was 10 years old, my family moved to a housing project in East Harlem. It was a tough neighborhood, and I was often the target of racism and discrimination. I was called names like "spic" and "beaner," and I was told to go back to my own country. But I refused to let the racists get to me. I was proud of my Puerto Rican heritage, and I was determined to make a difference in the world.
I went on to college and graduate school, and I became a writer and activist. I have written about my experiences as a Puerto Rican American woman, and I have fought for the rights of my people. I am proud of the life I have lived, and I have no regrets.
