On August 24, 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under a thick layer of ash and pumice. The eruption was so sudden and violent that it killed thousands of people and destroyed countless buildings.

In the centuries since the eruption, Pompeii and Herculaneum have been excavated, and their ruins have provided a wealth of information about Roman life and culture. Frozen In Time tells the story of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its impact on the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The book is written by acclaimed historian Robert Harris, and it is based on the latest archaeological evidence.

A Day of Devastation

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius began at around 1:00 PM on August 24, 79 AD. The eruption was preceded by a series of earthquakes, which had caused many people to flee the area. However, thousands of people remained in Pompeii and Herculaneum, unaware of the danger that was about to befall them.

As the eruption began, a thick cloud of ash and pumice spewed from the volcano. The ash and pumice fell on Pompeii and Herculaneum, burying the cities under a thick layer of debris. The weight of the ash and pumice caused the roofs of many buildings to collapse, and the heat from the eruption caused many people to suffocate or burn to death.

The eruption lasted for about 24 hours. By the time it was over, Pompeii and Herculaneum had been buried under a layer of ash and pumice that was up to 20 feet thick. Thousands of people had been killed, and the two cities were completely destroyed.

The Aftermath of the Eruption

In the aftermath of the eruption, the Roman government sent a team of engineers to Pompeii and Herculaneum to begin the work of excavating the cities. The excavation work was slow and difficult, but over the centuries, much of Pompeii and Herculaneum has been uncovered.

The ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum have provided a wealth of information about Roman life and culture. The cities have preserved everything from homes and shops to temples and theaters. The ruins have also yielded a wealth of artifacts, including sculptures, paintings, and mosaics.

Today, Pompeii and Herculaneum are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy. Visitors from all over the world come to see the ruins of these ancient cities and to learn about the tragic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
