They met amidst the chaos of battle. Anne was a prisoner, her clothes torn and her hair disheveled. Thomas was her captor, but he treated her with a respect that surprised her.

“My lady,” he said, “I am Sir Thomas Fairfax. I am charged with guarding you.”

Anne looked at him with defiance. “I am Lady Anne Hastings,” she said. “I will not be treated like a prisoner.”

Thomas smiled. “I understand your pride, my lady. But you are a prisoner of war. You must abide by my rules.”

Anne was furious. “I will not be treated like a common criminal!” she shouted.

Thomas’s smile faded. “My lady, I am not treating you like a criminal. I am treating you like a lady.”

Anne was taken aback by his words. She had never met a man who treated her with such respect.

“Why are you being so kind to me?” she asked.

“Because you deserve it,” Thomas said. “You are a strong and courageous woman. I admire that.”

Anne was touched by his words. She had never met a man who spoke to her like that before.

They spent the rest of the day talking. They talked about their lives, their hopes, and their dreams. Anne found herself drawn to Thomas. He was intelligent, compassionate, and brave.

As the sun began to set, Thomas led Anne to a small cottage. “This is where you will be staying,” he said. “You will be safe here.”
