Sudan Learning Through Life: An Inspiring Memoir by Elaine Thorp
Elaine Thorp's memoir, Sudan Learning Through Life, is an inspiring account of her journey of discovery and growth in the face of adversity. Born in Sudan to missionary parents, Thorp spent her early years in a remote village, where she learned to appreciate the beauty and diversity of African culture. However, her idyllic childhood was cut short by the outbreak of civil war in Sudan, and she was forced to flee her home with her family.
Thorp's family eventually settled in Canada, but she never forgot her experiences in Sudan. As an adult, she returned to Africa to work with refugees and other marginalized communities. Her work in Africa inspired her to write Sudan Learning Through Life, which is both a memoir of her own experiences and a meditation on the power of education to transform lives.

An Excerpt from Sudan Learning Through Life
"I was born in a small village in Sudan in 1956. My parents were missionaries, and I spent my early years in a world that was both familiar and exotic. I learned to speak Arabic and Dinka, the language of the local people. I played with the village children, and I learned about their culture and traditions. I also learned about the hardships of life in Africa. I saw poverty and disease, and I learned about the struggles of the people to survive.
"In 1964, civil war broke out in Sudan. My family was forced to flee our home, and we eventually settled in Canada. I was nine years old at the time, and I had never been outside of Sudan. I didn't speak English, and I didn't know anyone in Canada. It was a difficult time for me, but I was determined to make a new life for myself.
"I went to school and learned English. I made new friends and learned about Canadian culture. I also learned about the importance of education. Education was my way out of poverty. It was my way to make a difference in the world.
"After I graduated from high school, I went to university and studied social work. I wanted to work with people who were struggling, and I wanted to help them to improve their lives. After I graduated from university, I returned to Africa to work with refugees and other marginalized communities. I worked in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. I saw firsthand the power of education to transform lives. Education can give people the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives and the lives of their families. Education can also give people the confidence they need to stand up for their rights and to make a difference in their communities.
"I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to learn and to grow throughout my life. I have learned from my experiences in Sudan, Canada, and Africa. I have learned from the people I have met along the way. And I have learned from the challenges I have faced. I believe that we all have the potential to learn and to grow throughout our lives. We just need to be open to new experiences and to be willing to learn from our mistakes.
