In 1513, Magellan returned to Portugal and proposed a plan to King Manuel I to sail around the world. The king rejected Magellan's plan, and Magellan decided to offer his services to Spain.
The Expedition

Magellan named the ocean the "Pacific" because of its calm waters. The expedition also discovered the Philippines. Magellan was killed in a battle with natives in the Philippines in 1521.
However, the expedition continued on without Magellan. The Victoria, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, returned to Spain in 1522. The Victoria was the only ship to complete the circumnavigation of the world.
