An Aesop Fable

Once upon a time, there was a dog who lived in a manger. The manger was a trough that was used to feed the oxen. The dog did not need the manger, but he was too selfish to let the oxen use it.

The oxen were very hungry, but they were afraid of the dog. They knew that if they tried to eat from the manger, the dog would bite them.

The dog lay in the manger all day long, growling at the oxen and preventing them from eating. The oxen were very frustrated, but they did not know what to do.

One day, a wise old man came by. He saw the dog lying in the manger and the oxen standing around, hungry and frustrated.

The wise old man said to the dog, "Why are you lying in the manger? You do not need it. You are not even hungry." The dog meanly huffed, turned around and lied back down.

"That is not fair," said the wise old man. "You are being selfish. You are preventing the oxen from eating." The dog growled, got up and left.

The oxen were finally happy. They were so happy to eat from the trough that they did not care that the dog had been mean to them.

The wise old man said, "This fable teaches us the importance of being kind and considerate to others, even if we do not need what they have. We should not be selfish like the dog in the manger."

Moral of the story:

It is important to be kind and considerate to others, even if we do not need what they have. We should not be selfish like the dog in the manger.
