Nek Chand's journey began in the 1950s, when he was employed as a road inspector in Chandigarh. Disillusioned by the city's monotony and lack of soul, he began collecting discarded materials and creating sculptures in his spare time. These sculptures initially adorned his modest home, but as their number grew, he decided to find a more suitable location.

In 1975, Nek Chand discovered a hidden gorge on the outskirts of Chandigarh. With the permission of the local authorities, he began transforming this barren land into a magical kingdom. Using recycled materials such as broken tiles, bottles, and scrap metal, he created a labyrinth of pathways, courtyards, waterfalls, and palaces.

Nek Chand's sculptures are a testament to his boundless imagination and his deep love for India. They depict scenes from Indian mythology, folklore, and everyday life, capturing the essence of Indian culture and tradition. The Rock Garden is a living, breathing artwork, constantly evolving as Nek Chand adds new sculptures and installations.

Despite facing initial resistance from the authorities, who considered the Rock Garden an illegal construction, Nek Chand's unwavering dedication and the growing appreciation of his work eventually led to its recognition as a national treasure. In 1995, the Rock Garden was declared a government-protected site, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

The Rock Garden is much more than a tourist attraction; it is a symbol of hope, creativity, and the power of the human spirit. Nek Chand, a man with a humble background, transformed a wasteland into a work of art that has inspired millions around the world.

The Rock Garden is a testament to the transformative power of art, a testament to the indomitable spirit of Nek Chand, and a celebration of the beauty and diversity of India.
