In the years leading up to the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, I lived and worked in the country as an aid worker. I witnessed firsthand the rise of the Taliban, and the impact it has had on the people of Afghanistan.

The Taliban first emerged in Afghanistan in the early 1990s, following the withdrawal of Soviet forces from the country. The group quickly gained control of much of the country, imposing a strict interpretation of Islamic law. The Taliban's rule was marked by violence and oppression, and they were responsible for numerous human rights abuses.

In 2001, the United States invaded Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 attacks. The US-led coalition quickly overthrew the Taliban, and a new government was installed in Kabul. However, the Taliban did not disappear. They regrouped and launched an insurgency against the US-backed government.

For years, the Taliban insurgency simmered, but in 2021, the group launched a major offensive that quickly overwhelmed the Afghan security forces. By August, the Taliban had taken control of Kabul and the rest of the country. The US and its allies were forced to withdraw, and the Taliban was once again in power.

The Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan has had a devastating impact on the country. The group has imposed a strict interpretation of Islamic law, which has restricted the rights of women and girls. The Taliban has also been accused of committing human rights abuses, including summary executions and torture.

The future of Afghanistan is uncertain. The Taliban has promised to rule with a more moderate hand than it did in the 1990s, but it remains to be seen whether the group will keep its promises. The US and its allies are watching closely, and they are prepared to take action if the Taliban violates international law.

The rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan is a complex and tragic story. It is a story of violence, oppression, and human suffering. It is also a story of hope and resilience. The people of Afghanistan have endured decades of war and hardship, but they remain determined to build a better future for themselves and their children.
