From Romania to Palestine

Rabbi Yehuda Amital was born on November 23, 1924, in Radauti, Romania. His father was a rabbi, and his mother was a teacher. Amital received a traditional Jewish education, studying the Talmud and other religious texts from a young age. He also showed a keen interest in secular knowledge, reading widely in philosophy and literature.

In 1941, when Amital was just 17 years old, his hometown was occupied by Nazi Germany. Amital and his family were forced into a ghetto, where they endured horrific conditions. In 1942, Amital's father was taken away by the Nazis and never seen again. Despite the horrors he witnessed, Amital remained steadfast in his faith and his commitment to helping others.

In 1944, Amital was sent to a labor camp in Poland. He managed to escape and made his way to Hungary, where he joined a group of Jewish partisans who were fighting against the Nazis. After the war, Amital spent some time in a refugee camp in Italy before finally making his way to Palestine in 1946.

Kibbutz Har Etzion and the Founding of the Yeshiva

Upon arriving in Palestine, Amital joined Kibbutz Har Etzion, a religious kibbutz located in the Judean Hills. He became a member of the kibbutz's leadership and played a key role in its development. In 1968, Amital was appointed Rosh Yeshiva (Dean) of Har Etzion. Under his leadership, the yeshiva grew rapidly and became one of the most important centers of Jewish learning in Israel. Amital's teachings were characterized by their depth, clarity, and relevance to contemporary issues. He emphasized the importance of scholarship, critical thinking, and spiritual growth.

Amital also played a leading role in the establishment of the Gush Etzion bloc of settlements, which became home to thousands of Jewish families.
